Abseil reaches new heights
A record number of participants ensured this year’s abseil has been the best yet.
Over 600 daredevils took on the 500 ft drop from above the West Tower doors, fundraising for a range of charities. Due to popular demand there were 3 dates for this year’s event which took place 1st, 4th and 8th August. There have been record returns for sponsorship monies raised for the charities involved, many who have already booked again for next year.
Spectators and friends and family were treated to a showcase of classic vintage American cars that lined up outside to compliment the ‘Grease’ theme of this year’s event. The weather even played ball and stayed mainly dry allowing everyone to enjoy a fun filled day and incredible atmosphere.
There was even a proposal, where Clare Bevan (pictured) who was abseiling for Legacy Liverpool and her now fiancée Dave Wilson got engaged half way down. Read article featured in the Liverpool Echo here.
This year’s participants in the abseil include those raising money for The Big Help project, Zoe's Place Baby Hospice, Children's Society, Nugent Care, Everton in the Community, Freshfield Animal rescue, Alzheimers Society, Teenage Cancer Trust, Mencap Liverpool, Animal Aid, St Luke’s hospice, Jospice, Alder Hey Hospital, Roy Castle Foundation, Ron McDonald House, Parkinsons NW, Royal hospice St John's, Stroke Association and Maggie's Centre.
Mary Thompson who abseiled as part of a team of six raising funds for The Big Help project said “I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s scary standing at the top but the sheer elation when you are on your way down to the bottom is fantastic. The charity really benefits from the fundraising. It is a really enjoyable experience; I also did it last year and have booked already for next year!”
Irene Axon, Senior Community Fundraising Manager at Alder Hey Children's Charity who also participated said “Another fantastic day. Wonderfully organised and great fun for all our supporters.”
