On the fortieth anniversary of the children’s Christmas classic book, ‘The Snowman’ tour by Carrot Productions returns to Liverpool Cathedral on 29th December for two performances at 5 pm and 7:30 pm.

The country may be only just emerging from the long winter months but tickets are already on sale with the organisers predicting the show to sell-out long before December. Tickets start at £20 for adults and £15 for children.

In 1982 Raymond Briggs’ timeless book about a magical friendship between a young boy and the snowman he creates was made into an animated film first shown on Christmas Eve.  Composed by Howard Blake, the beautiful score includes the evocative ‘Walking in the Air’. Made famous by Aled Jones, it proved an immediate hit. A heart-warming perennial favourite, delighting audiences of all ages, it has become one of the soundtracks to Christmas.

Parents can treat their children to this magical Christmas show with a live orchestra which also includes a performance of The Bear and The Piano. By David Litchfield, this beautifully-illustrated tale of music, friendship and adventure has been turned into an exclusive animated film by Carrot Productions. With music by Daniel Whibley played live by a professional orchestra, and a narration recorded by superstar Joanna Lumley this entrancing creation looks set to become a family favourite for the next generation.

Speaking about her involvement, Joanna Lumley said:

"In the tradition of Peter and the Wolf and The Snowman, The Bear and the Piano is an enchanting story told with glorious music and is a bewitching treat for all ages. I am 109 and read the tale aloud and felt as though I were seven again. Delicious! "

David Litchfield, the author, is excited, too:

“It is great to see my book animated on the big screen, accompanied by such brilliant live music, and of course the unmistakable voice of Joanna Lumley reading along.” For Dan Whibley writing the music has been a joy: “My inspiration came from the beautiful illustrations and heart-warming story: from the sounds and remoteness of the huge forest to the energy of the big city, and from the first tentative attempts playing the piano to the international superstar. I have interspersed my own music with a few well-known piano pieces that I hope bring the story to life.”

As well as two absorbing stories, audiences can enjoy:

  • The live orchestra is drawn from some of the top musicians in the country, many of whom are members of such orchestras as The Hallé and the BBC Philharmonic.
  • The performance will feature a young soloist from our area singing the haunting Walking in the Air solo which lies at the heart of the Snowman. Auditions will be held in the Autumn to find suitable soloists to take up this superb performance opportunity.
  • A rousing Christmas Overture
  • A fun introduction to the orchestra
  • A visit from the organisation’s very own snowman!

This is part of the sixth annual tour by Carrot Productions.
