Welcome to Liverpool Cathedral’s e-news. As we continue to build back in line with the Government’s road map it is just over a week before we re-open for visitors. This will be an exciting time and a busy time.

From May 21 we will be hosting the much awaited and acclaimed Peace Doves Installation. A magnificent art installation by the artist Peter Walker. We will also be open for the cities Light Night on the evening of May 21.

As well as the main installation in the Well, visitors to the Cathedral will be able to enjoy the ‘Angel Wings’ art installation (as we had last December) and make time and space for reflection in a space entitled ‘Peace to Ourselves’. We will be able to lay buttons within a huge dove laid out on the floor, as we seek to come to terms with the many kinds of grief that we are experiencing. The Holy Spirit Chapel will be open for private prayer. During the summer term and summer holidays, on a regular cycle, there will be educational events, activities for families, yoga, live music performed by talented local musicians, external tours, special events, some late-night opening and an exploration of the theme of ‘Peace’.

From May 17 the Welsford Bistro will be open for indoor eating and an exciting new menu (see below).

So it is all go, and I just hope and pray that nothing changes between now and the 17th.

Our services will continue in the lock-down pattern, but as we look towards Trinity Sunday we are hoping to extend our Sunday Service provision. Watch this space!

The Bible Course

The Bible Course is underway on Zoom on Thursday evenings through April and May, 7-8.15pm. It is not too late to join, though. The easy-to-access 8 sessions will be ideal for those fresh to the Christian faith, or anyone who wants a refresher about what’s in the Bible and where to find it. Supper with the Scriptures

The Gilbert-Scott Lectures on Science and Faith 2021

“Living in Love and Faith”

The Church of England is engaged in a process of discernment around matters of identity, sexuality, relationships and marriage, and every church is encouraged to participate in the small-group discussion materials that accompany the recent report ‘Living in Love and Faith’. We are offering the five-week sessions on Thursday lunchtimes, 22nd April – 20th May incl., 1.00-2.15pm on Zoom. For more information, please go to: /getting-involved/Exploring-Faith.

Clergy Support Trust Festival

Liverpool Cathedral Choir is very proud to have been invited to take part in the Clergy Trust Festival service, the world´s oldest choral festival to be broadcast on May 11th at 6pm.  The choir had been looking forward to travelling to London to sing at St Paul´s Cathedral with their choir and the choir of Southwark Cathedral both in 2020 and then 2021 but Covid19 put pay to that. Instead, a film crew visited the cathedral and recorded our choir singing the Anthem O Clap your hands by Vaughan Williams and we then joined the other two choirs via a click track and video to record the hymn, All my hope on God is founded. Night Light & Peace Doves

The primary attraction for Light Night will be the opening our major art installation, Peace Doves – which runs from Light Night until the end of August.  In addition however there will be a range of added entertainment to engage with over the evening – including the Angel Wings projection and the buttons.  In terms of music we are also having Choral Evensong at 5.30pm followed by, what promises to be a hugely entertaining organ demonstration from Ian Tracey. Throughout the evening there will be choir performances and other musical interludes from our hugely talented cathedral musicians as well as a series of special guest performances from Katumba drummers.  The cathedral shop will be open and the Welsford Bistro will be serving food and drinks all evening on the Welsford Porch.

The Welsford Bistro

Neil and Damien are excited to be finally opening the Welsford Bistro for indoor dining from the 17th. They will be serving an extensive menu consisting of an all day brunch section with classics such as Full English, eggs Benedict, and smashed avocado and poached eggs on muffins.

Neil and Damien will have their main menu section with a Welsford Tower Burger, traditional Scouse (and blind Scouse!), homemade soup, jacket potatoes and toasted ciabattas. The Scouse and Soup will now be served with homemade sourdough or focaccia bread. There will be daily specials with seasonal ingredients from our local suppliers. 

They will be serving their Cathedral blend coffee from local roasters Joe Black Coffee with a selection of homemade cakes and scones. There will also be a selection of cold sandwiches and salads available from the Grab and Go section.

Pentecost 2021 – Two Cathedrals Service Online

This year’s Two Cathedrals’ service will be online, due to the ongoing restrictions, an act of worship including voices from across the region, with stories of where the Holy Spirit has been at work in this last year in and beyond the churches. With music from the cathedral choirs, and beginning under the Peace Doves installation in the Well, please join in from home as it is broadcast via the Cathedral Facebook and YouTube channels from midday on Pentecost Sunday.
