Late night ‘Twilight Thursday’, evening tower openings have returned to Liverpool Cathedral.

Opening times change throughout the season due to sunset times so check out our full schedule here

On five special evenings during the late night opening season, as well as experiencing magnificent views from the tower, members of the public will be allowed to enter the bell ringing chamber which is rarely open to visitors.

The late night opening season runs from March 31st - October 27th, and the bells will be open to the public on May 5th, June 2nd, July 7th, August 4th and September 1st.

On these special evenings, visitors can meet the bell ringers, enjoy demonstrations and displays and hand bell ringing before entering the bell chamber itself, where they will see at close quarters the heaviest and highest peal of bells in the world.  New for 2016 is a bells simulator so visitors can experience what it is like to ring the bells at Liverpool Cathedral.

The tower will also host an extra late night opening on Fri 13th May to help celebrate Light Night, an evening where cultural attractions across the city remain open after hours for people to enjoy – and the Cathedral will be once again hosting a bumper programme of things to see and do.

Eryl Parry, Director of Enterprise, said “The weekly late night tower opening is well established as a ‘must do’ in the city. There is something really magical about seeing the lights of the city begin to shine from the rooftop of the Cathedral, set against the backdrop of what can be the amazingly colourful skyscapes in the setting sun.”

“We now have even more to offer for 2016 having invested in a bells simulator made especially for Liverpool Cathedral for our monthly ‘bell nights’ and a totally rebuilt walkway at the top improving the experience for our visitors. We are very grateful to our dedicated and skilled team of bell ringers who will be on hand to help people experience what it is like to be a bell ringer.  The simulator is clever and a fun thing to do – something of a great team exercise!  Not surprising for Britain’s largest Cathedral that we also have the world’s highest and heaviest peal of bells, and we want to show them off!”
